FAQ

Why should I buy veterinary diets from Chewy?

We offer competitive prices and free shipping on orders over $49. Plus, you'll save more if you sign up for automatic refills with Autoship at Checkout. Chewy experts are available 24/7 to answer any questions you have.

How do I order veterinary diets?

  1. Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
  2. At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
  3. Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.

I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?

Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.

Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?

Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.

Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?

Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.

Do authorizations expire?

Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.

Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.

What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?

Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

    Rodney loves it!

By BEJO on Nov 16, 2021

The vet recommended this canned food due to a bout of pancreatitis the my dog had. Rodney loved it. When he sees me get the can out of the fridge, he goes bonkers. If he could speak English in addition to dog, he would tell me to hurry up and get that to his feeding station. Needless to say, I try to obey him.

    Dog Won't Eat It

By dogmom on Oct 19, 2021

My 14 year old chihuahua has been on Hill's I/D for many years, and suddenly it was no longer available. My vet recommended Purina E/N and my dog will barely touch it, he sniffs it and walks away. I must admit that the smell is not appealing to me at all. I have resorted to mixing some fresh cooked ground beef in it in the attempt to get him to eat which has barely helped. I'm hoping Hill's will soon resume production on I/D

    Pro Plan Wet Food

By Brodey on Nov 10, 2021

Five year my Maltese was eating dry food I was not aware he had digestive issues until 9 appointment to the veterinarians office. My new veterinarian suggested this set food which helped so much if not for the Pro plan dog food my fur baby was going to be leaving me.

    So good and so healthy

By Happyowner on Sep 17, 2021

It is my second time buying the EN Purina pro plan wet food. My vet recommended it to one of my dogs who had an unhealthy gut. My 12-year-old dog Fluffy has never seemed better! She gobbles it up. I also want to add that I love how fast Chewy delivered. I live in Houston and a tropical storm was supposed to hit my area and I was worried my dog's food wouldn't arrive before the storm but it did. I am so happy with Chewy's services!

    So far, so good

By UrbanUtah on Aug 25, 2021

One of our 3 furry kids has some significant digestive health issues and we often feed prescription Hills i/d or the Hill's sensitive stomach turkey stew, which has been out-of-stock for several weeks. The last batch of the Hills sensitive stomach we got was from a different online retailer and caused vomiting and diarrhea in all 3 of our dogs within hours of ingesting. Our "iron stomach" Sheltie got the sickest. We took him to the vet and got some anti-nausea meds and prescription i/d from our vet---it too gave our dogs diarrhea. Bewildered and wondering if maybe we got bad batches of canned food, we searched for an alternative and switched to the Purina EN with the help of our vet who updated One of our 3 furry kids has some significant digestive health issues and we often feed prescription Hills i/d or the Hill's sensitive stomach turkey stew, which has been out-of-stock for several weeks. Bewildered and wondering if maybe we got bad batches of canned food, we searched for an alternative and switched to the Purina EN with the help of our vet who updated the prescription to include this brand (not sure why prescription intestinal diets have specific "brand" prescriptions from the vet, but apparently they do). All 3 of our dogs improved immediately upon switching to this EN and are doing much better, vomiting and diarrhea stopped immediately. I sent an email to Hills with the batch # and production #, but haven't heard back. All we know is that the Purina EN is what got all of them back to normal. They have all been fed the same Victor kibble for years and were halfway through the 50 lb bag when we introduced the new case of Hills canned food so we're pretty sure there was a batch issue. We will stick with Purina EN going forward. … more

    Great food!

By MarionL on Oct 27, 2021

My puppy has food sensitivity and after trying all sorts of different foods, this one has finally agreed with her. She had diarrhea like you couldn't believe, now totally normal. Thank goodness!

    Older doggy with tummy problems

By Janna on Aug 28, 2021

Our vet started our doggy on this food early this year after tummy problems. We feel it has kept him stable and kept those tummy problems under control so far (he's 14.5 years old). He loved the flavor at first, but is very picky so he is a little bored with it - but Chewy has some good options for mix ins that allow us to keep using this food. He has since been diagnosed with early kidney disease so we half and half this with the other food they had us use - the NF version.

    My dog loves this!

By Diet on Sep 29, 2021

My dog was having diarrhea on and off and recently recovered from pyometra surgery. My vet recommended this while hospitalized and she loved it. With this food there is no variation in her stool. It's easy on her tummy and keeps her nice and regular.

    Extra convenient

By Murphy on Oct 2, 2021

Shopping for a prescription food is made easy at Chewy's. Don't have to lug it home, provided "the store" had the food in stock in the first place. I don't shop in pet stores anymore!

First order had a glitch, but fine now

By Jerry on Aug 17, 2021

Our Doxie has a sensitive stomach and a prescription for her can dogfood. It took us a few days to get the vet and Chewy in sync, not the group, but delivery was a little quicker than we anticipated. Our dog loves this food. It's great to see her eat. I just wish she would slow down a little
